Meet seven-time Mile winner Chad Ho

The competitive open water swimming bug bit Chad Ho 13 years ago, and the unpredictability of the sport is what he loves most!

“It’s a mysterious sport,” he explained. “Not knowing what the outcome will be gives me an extra adrenaline rush.”

We caught up with Chad and asked him how becoming a father since his last aQuellé Midmar Mile has impacted his life. “Nothing has changed in terms of my training schedule and competing,” he explained. “I still train just as hard and just as much, competing as much as I can.”

If anything has changed, Chad told the aQuellé Midmar Mile team, it’s been his mindset, and luckily for him, he has always managed to separate aspects of his life and not allow one to affect the other.  “Becoming a dad has been the best experience of my life and I enjoy coming home from training and switching off from swimming during the time I am with my family. When I am in the pool I am 110% focused on my training and when I am at home I am 110% focused on my family.”

For Chad, the most technically difficult aspect of open water swimming is the same unpredictable conditions that give him that adrenaline rush. “If it’s windy, there will be a current and waves,” he explained. “My focus is always on my stroke and on sighting often.”

When we asked Chad what advice he would give someone taking on the aQuellé Midmar Mile for the first time this year, he explained that the most important thing is to stay calm and not be concerned about achieving a certain time or position. “Just remain calm and focus on making it to the other end safely. Keep sighting all the way and keep your path as straight as possible,” he advised.

Chad Ho is a gentleman first and a swimmer second and we wish him the very best of luck this weekend.
