Most people who had lost a leg two years earlier wouldn’t think about taking on their first aQuellé Midmar Mile – but Vanessa Earle is not most people.
Having been a swimmer back in her school days, she had always wanted to add the Mile to her list of accomplishments, but she only made the big splash in 2014, and in 2018 she finished third in her category in an impressive time of 38:55.
Although she’s completed five Miles now, her most memorable moment is still finishing it that very first time. “Just knowing that I could do this was amazing,” she said. “That’s why I’ve kept going back, with the awesome support of my family and friends.”
We asked Vanessa what advice she would give somebody planning to take on their first aQuellé Midmar Mile in 2019. “Train hard!” she responded. “Focus especially on your breathing and when race day arrives, just enjoy every moment of the experience. You’ll feel awesome and once the Midmar bug has bitten, you’ll be back every year.”
Vanessa is definitely a swimmer to look out for in event 1 on race day in February 2019!
