Entries to all seeding events in the 2019/2020 swimming season are now open. These events form the prequel to the 47th annual aQuellé Midmar Mile, which will take place at Midmar Dam on 8 and 9 February 2020.
The season starts with a splash at the Sun City Swim, which will take place at Sun City Resort on 26 October 2019. This event will offer a 3km swim for the serious open water swimmers, and a 1 500-metre event which is ideal training for those planning to tackle Midmar Dam in February. There is also a 600-metre Fun Swim which is perfect for anybody who wants to try open water swimming for the first time. This event is a firm favourite among children whose parents have introduced them to open water swimming from a young age.
The second event of the season takes place on Sunday 3 November, at Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge in Muldersdrift, Gauteng. Cradle Moon Swim Challenge 1 promises to be a spectacular day of swimming. It will offer a 3km swim as well as 1 000-metre events separated by gender and age categories. The final event of the day will be a 400-metre Fun Swim. Cradle Moon Swim Challenge 2, to be held on 8 December 2019 will follow the same format, but adds a 5km swim to the mix for those swimmers wanting an extra challenge.
Open water swimming in 2020 splashes off on 18-19 January with the ever-popular Lake Heritage Water Festival. This event offers 1 200m swims for the various age groups, as well as 3km and 5km swims. The event ends off with a 600m Fun Swim for young and old alike to enjoy.
Entering a seeding event before you take on the aQuellé Midmar Mile is not compulsory, but it is highly recommended. It gives you great practice and experience of swimming in open water, which is vastly different to swimming in a pool. Over and above this, it gives race organisers an accurate and up-to-date seeding time for you. This ensures that you will enter the water with swimmers of similar abilities on 8-9 February 2020. You can enter the seeding events of your choice online.
If you are based in KwaZulu-Natal, the seeding event to enter is the Greendale SuperSpar Capital K. This event will take place at Midmar Dam on Sunday 1 December.
